In order to become a "pure-bred" rock hound, you will need to get some gear, start a rock collection, catalog all of your rocks, go on geology treks, identify your rocks, display them, and preserve them. To start your collection, you will need to get some rocks, and to get some rocks, you will need to go on a "rock hunt." So, for your trip, you will need some gear. Here is what you'll need; two rock hammers, one large/one small, (see left) a journal to take notes, a journal to catalog rocks in, geological maps of the area you are visiting, large and small cold chisels, a bolster, (wide chisel) high-powered microscope, (must be portable) newspapers for a safe trip home for the rocks, and a directional device. So, now let's go on that trip. Find a good safe spot. Tell somebody where you're going. Remember, make sure that your specimen will not be damaged on the trip home. Once that is completed, you will need to identify your rocks. A few methods of doing this are, the taste test, the streak test, specific gravity, hardness, and glow under an ultraviolet light. Then, you can show off your collection to the world! Congratulations! You are now a rock hound!
